Customer experience: A real HMI application example-0

Did you know that the Weintek HMI Panel can be considered the best visualisation solution on the market? Many articles and how-to videos on the ZTF Lasma website give the impression that these panels offer the perfect solution for every situation. It may seem that all you have to do is connect the HMI panel to the power supply and your visualisation will create itself. But what is the reality outside the marketing happy place bubble?

When it comes to practical communication, intuitive visualisation and functionality, the challenges are obvious. In this article, you will find four real stories of companies that took up the challenge and created tailor-made solutions.

Find out how Weintek HMI helped them optimise processes and improve efficiency.

Table of contents:

A small slice of reality from Weintek user experience stories that shed light on the original problem, the potential solution and the real benefits from the users' own perspective.

The Winwood story

Winwood is a top-class stage equipment manufacturer that has been supplying European theatres with everything they need for unforgettable performances for more than 10 years. With the latest technology and software, Winwood provides superior automation systems and mechanisms that allow easy and seamless coordination of stage transitions. A company representative, an automation engineer Emīls Vīndedzis, shared his experience with Weintek HMI.

A problem that needed to be solved

The initial goal was to create a medium-sized control system with HMI and PLC control. The aim was to implement a user interface developed in-house and to realize it in an easy-to-use device. This was a pilot project, which has now evolved into the product "SmartControl PLC" - a control system based on a 7'' Weintek HMI main control console.

Solution

The original version of the system used Weintek MT8071iE designing a new visualisation, using icons and additional fonts of your own creation. Later, this model was changed to cMT2078X because its design fitted better with the concept of stage system controls - the industry's predominant colour is black. It is also the model currently in priority use. If we need a larger screen or additional functions (in the case of the WiFi module), we use other models - cMT1106X, cMT2108X2.

Weintek benefits

With the Weintek HMI project, the company gained:

  • Modern and aesthetic design
  • Easy programming
  • The ability to use your own icons and designs
  • A flexible system with diverse options
  • Enable CodeSys
  • WiFi modules

Company comment

"Weinteks could make a version of the cMT2078X that could be mounted from the back of the dashboard." - Emīls Vīndedzis

System Design stāsts

System Design is a company specialising in industrial and process automation, offering a wide range of products and services. From air filtration plant control systems to building control and HVAC integration, System Design provides innovative solutions that improve efficiency and reduce costs. The company's founder Jānis Koroševskis shares his experience.

A problem that needed to be solved

Large manufacturing company with sophisticated HVAC and compressed air (8 bar) system. To reduce electricity costs.

Solution

Weintek HMI panels were equipped with an internal communication network where you can control your zone from any display - shut down the production floor with valves, see, control, monitor the compressed air system as a whole, and control your shop floor climate and filtration system. In total 7xCMT2078X each in its own production area with one PLC as MASTER. Each display as a Modbus RTU master for summing signals to valves and sensors as well as AHU equipment.

Weintek benefits

With the Weintek HMI project, the company gained:

  • Each workshop can manage its own zone
  • Disable compressed air in your zone
  • Set air supply/filtration parameters
  • Set the timetable
  • See the overall state of the system
  • Monitor and configure remotely

Company comment

"Sky is the limit. Before connecting the master, I made a daily/weekly timetable for the zone with the built-in IF functions, without using macros or Codesys" - Jānis Koroševskis

Vides resursu centrs story

Vides resursu centrs is the largest waste sorting plant in the Baltics, having processed 260 000 tonnes of pre-sorted waste in its first year of operation, separating recyclable materials and hazardous waste. The centre's innovative solutions and efficient operation help to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, contributing to more environmentally friendly resource management. Weintek's Technical Director Jānis Griķis.

A problem that needed to be solved

In order to use and apply resources more efficiently, there was a need for dynamic control and visualisation of different processes.

Solution

A decision is taken in favour of WeintekcMT3162X. In addition, a Seneca electricity meter and weighing module were used. Both modules use the Modbus TCP/IP protocol, which is easy to read with Weintek. Next, I developed the visualisation in Weintek so that on one of the pages you can see a daily summary of the last seven days (electricity consumption, hours worked at a given load, production, etc.), so you can see which shifts have done better and which have had any problems. With Weintek's Trend Display you can clearly monitor the real-time load of the plant, and with the Event Bar Chart you can very easily see the events of the day and the historical load of the plant.

Weintek benefits

With the Weintek HMI project, the company gained:

  • Support for large communication protocols
  • Very easy and fast connectivity to other devices
  • Convenient control and information reading

Company comment

"Weintek is an extensive and versatile device for both industrial scale and home use in the smart home project." - Jānis Griķis

The Liepāja Water Story

Liepājas ūdens SIA is a capital company owned by Liepāja City Municipality, founded in 2004. The company provides quality drinking water extraction, preparation and supply, as well as wastewater collection, treatment and discharge in accordance with Latvian and EU regulations. A company representative Uldis Zīverts, shares his experience.

A problem that needed to be solved

Pumping stations with partial information available to the operator in the control room, incomplete pump management and records of operating hours. Manual rotation of pump cascades between operation and rest modes.

Solution

After attending a Weintek training course organised by ZTF Lāsma, we decided to use Weintek to upgrade the pump station in the pilot projectcMT-3072X a visualisation panel and the iR-ETN40r remote I/O module. iR-ETN40r was further enhanced with analogue input modules. The operator can now see the current pressure and flow in the main pipelines and the levels in the clean water tanks in the control room. The rotation of the pump cascades is automatic and the operating hours are also recorded.

Weintek benefits

With the Weintek HMI project, the company gained:

  • All relevant real-time information on the status of the pumping station available to the operator
  • Accurate information to make the right decisions
  • Automatic pump rotation and working hours for more accurate maintenance planning and costing
  • The ability to quickly update and improve data visualisation

Company comment

"To keep an eye on what's happening in the industry, to keep learning and studying to find ways to improve the technical performance that is there." - Uldis Zīverts

Conclusions

Here are the different industries, the different applications and the wealth of different benefits that will be revealed once the project is realised with a Weintek HMI. Clearly defined ideas open the door to customised solutions with invaluable benefits.
